Studio #1: Still Life Pointilism

Our first studio project (aside from the color wheel) is Pointillism. We were required by our instructor to find (or create) a still life image that we will use to transfer into our canvas and use the Pointillism technique to paint our craft.

The basis of my first craft is an image I took back in August 2016. It was a surprise gift I was going to give to one of my close friends who loved a Kpop band called BTS (a ring with the name Jimin engraved on its silver lining (my friend's favorite member) linked with a silver pendant whose engraving states the name of the band and their debut.) The background of the gift is my bed sheet which I'll later explain the inspiration of my final product.

The process:

The canvas size should have been 16 x 20, however i used something a little bigger. The media used was acrylic paint, and Q-tips to create the pointillism effect. The original sketch is seen below:

In progress:

It took me forever to do these dots. I didn't know what to start on first and what was complimentary of the other color. I decided to first do the box and work my way through the background. Also note that the box's style was a little different because I didn't use a Q-Tip but used a paint brush and dabbed them in there.

The Final Product.

Initially the painting should have been a still life based on the image above, however, we are free to follow our imagination to where it take us. My finish product: my ordinary bedsheet turned whimsical themed painting, something befitting I may add because BTS's songs (and persona) are known to be cryptic, whimsical, and often eccentric (hence the alien depiction, UFO, over large flora, and marine tentacles).

Reflection: Despite the difficulty of tediously dotting in those dots, this wasn't a difficult task to execute. I'm quite surprised at the results actually because I'm not an artistically gifted person so I'm kind of proud on how it came out.

Cheers! :)
